USING ENGLISH–LANGUAGE MOVIE AS AN ELT MATERIAL FOR INTERMEDIATE LEVEL OF LEARNER

Abstract: Learning language is started by imitating which means on teaching English language we need a condition that give a chance for learner to imitate. Our research is purposed to develop and find effective method of teaching Basic English language in Indonesia. Using movie as an ELT material will be great method to attract and provide that situation and give learner opportunity to discover new word and understand it by hear the word pronounced and watch the implementation of it. The subject of study is second grade student of SMP N 2 Wonogiri at 2c class. The procedure of this research is by presenting the movie, questioner and comprehension test. We use anime/ cartoon movie Despicable Me; 2010, and Up; 2009 .There were so many students which comprehended about the movies and achieved the expected result moreover there were so many students which achieved exceed expectation on research approximation.

INTRODUCTION
English is an International language which taught in every country in the world. In Indonesia, English is learned by students of elementary school to university. English also have been a second language which really important to learn. By mastering English language one can easily improve his knowledge of globalization through any media in English.
To learn English as second language, materials of English Language Teaching are needed. Material used is different; it is based on the level of students. Each age of learner need different treatment in order to get the best result of material comprehension. Child period is the level when the basic language teaching should be applied, and in the medium level of learner, intermediate material also should be applied.

Learning language actually has the same method and characteristic, for example, like when the baby grows up, and then he understands his own mother language, it is because they were familiar with the language. According to the book English Language Teaching, Methods, tools and techniques, the principle of learning language is imitating. Learning language is started by imitate sound because sound decides the essence of language. A child imitates the pronouncing word from their family member to learn their mother tongue. So it also can be applied on learning English (Patel and Jain, 16). Children see people around them speak, hear it and mimic it. So, actually the difference between learning mother language and second language is just about the custom of using the language itself. Learning mother language is easy because we know the word means, we understand the implementation of each vocabulary. Some people may think that learning mother language is without effort because they did not realize about the process of learning language during their growth. On the contrary, for some people, learning English as second language seems to be a difficult subject. It is because they are unfamiliar with the English itself, which means that they didn’t really understand about the word and less of vocabulary, besides that they also didn’t common with the English language. They less see and hear people speak English and it’s very contrary with the condition of learning mother language during growth period.
Watching and Listening are the first step to learn language. For baby, learning language is started when he watch people around him speak and doing some experiences which give an implementation of their speaking. For example parents usually say “bapak” which means “father” to train their baby to speak while pointing on father position. So, automatically baby will understand that word “bapak” means the guy which pointed on. They hear the word “bapak” then they see the implementation of the word by looking the pointed one to interpret what the word “bapak” means. Learning English as second language also has the same method with learning mother language, which mean by watching and listening people speak in English, it can engage them to interpret the language easily.
On teaching English, we should make learner familiar with the language. We found that by using English language movie as one of ELT material, it can attract them to learn and make them usual with English language. We learn from our experiences that by watching English language movies, we can improve our vocabulary and interpretation of the words meaning.
English language movie is one instrument which has so many effects to make the audience understand the story line. So it will be very helpful to be applied as one of ELT material especially for intermediate level learner in order to build the basic comprehension of English language.

METHOD
Learning language is started by understanding vocabulary. When we were babies, we learned and comprehended the word from the implementation of what we heard and saw regularly, then the word was memorized by our brain automatically, so, it looks like there was no effort to learn mother language. However, learning English as second language in Indonesia, is different, we cannot depend on situation and brain ability like once we were babies anymore. There is should be an effort to memorizes and comprehends the vocabulary of English.
Watching movie is one of media which can provides that kind of situation. Audience can hear the word and read it (by Indonesian / English subtitle) and at the same time they see the condition where the word is spoken.
On this context, we split learner into three groups, first; beginner level learner, which includes elementary students, second; intermediate level learner, which includes junior until senior high school students, and the last; advanced level learner, which includes college students and above. In this article, we will only discuss about using movies as an ELT material for intermediate level learner. Intermediate level is phase when learner has an understanding on so many vocabularies and grammars; however they still need guidance on learning language. So, it’s a good phase when they are prepared and ready to be applied the basic language learning method.
Our test is helped by students of SMP N 2 Wonogiri. They are in the second grade and on the 2c class. We ask their help, because their averages of English mark are just so-so. Their daily task marks are around 5(five) to 8(eight). Total number of students is 40 which dominated by female; 28 students and male; 12 students.
                Movie we used was English-language movie with English and Indonesian subtitle. To avoid violence and pornography, we use anime/ cartoon movie (Despicable Me; 2010, and Up; 2009). Those movies are categorized as family movie, which means that it is designed to be watched by whole family or in any ages.
                To facilitate the research, we use the computer laboratory on SMPN 2 Wonogiri which provides 40 units of computer and can be used as movie player for each student. Each computer is attached by a headphone device to make the sound clearer. And during the movies presented, each student have to prepare a dictionary to help them comprehend the vocabulary especially on the movie with English subtitle section.
                The procedures are, first; on the first meeting student watched the first movie with Indonesian subtitle in the computer laboratory, so each student get one monitor. Before that, students were prepared to pay attention on the words and sentences used on the movie. During the movie presented, they can pause, rewind or go forward as long as they can understand the story line and pay attention on vocabularies and sentences. After watching the movie, students are asked to fill in the questioner. On the second meeting, students watched the first movie again with English subtitle and then filled the same questioner and vocabulary test. On the next meeting student watched the second movie with Indonesian subtitle. Then they filled the questioner. The next meeting, second movie was presented with English subtitle and students are asked to fill in the question and tested just like before. The result of questioner and test are the measurement of influence from the movie to their language skill.
                The test above actually is not expected to give significant result on how movie could influences student. Because like what we explain above, the situation which occurs by watching movie should be implemented continuously to make the English familiar and help them to memorize and comprehend English word or sentence easier. However, by the test we still can measure how movie could give the effect and predict the long period application result.




RESULT
            Using movie as ELT material give so many effects and results on student comprehension of English language. From the experiences that we have done to the student of 2c class, SMP N 2 Wonogiri, we know that base on the questioner, all student seem to be enjoyed the activity and follow it with earnest. 90% of student on the class, which mean 36 students answered that by watching the movies, they discover new vocabularies and understand some kind structure of sentence and the implementation of it. 10% of student answered that they only get few new knowledge and in fact they lack of understanding about the conversation on the movie section using English subtitle.
                On this experience, we got the result that most of the student is memorize the new vocabulary and understand the meaning of it easier. Even the student use the dictionary more than interpret it using the context but it shows that the activity encourages them to learn.

DISCUSSION
                Learning English as second language is started by imitating the word and comprehending it. Using movie makes the process more effective. It encourage students at least to find the meaning of word in order to comprehend the story line, so they did it without forces which would make them feel stressed. It’s desired that after following experiences, student will discover new vocabulary which they didn’t understand. Movie language actually is not formal language, but there are so many words, phrases and sentences which used on casual or informal activity there is also vocabulary which used on several certain conditions. Even the comprehending of word meaning is still helped by dictionary, but at least they watch the implementation or the condition where the word was used and they also heard the pronunciation of the word. It is means that it will let them memorize and interpret the meaning of the word easier. Actually the comprehending of sentence structure on or even grammar is not expected too much, because we belief that it needs more than just two film and several meetings on realized the process of comprehending English structure or grammar. However, we found that so many students understand about the structure sentences used on the movies and some of them also understand about tenses which used on the movies.
            It’s not all of movie can be used as an ELT material, because there are so many aspects which should be considered. The content, story line and background of movie should be suitable with the learner and of course did not go off from the purpose of education. On learning English, the movie used is one which gives clear pronunciation to help learner understands it better. There are also some classifications of learner which appropriate and suitable with this method. It’s only learner which more inclined as audiovisual learner; Learner which receive the material and more understand it better as long as they use audio and visual media or by seeing and listening.

CONCLUSION
                Using movie as an ELT material which applied to intermediate level learner is very good method on building the situation and condition of effective language learning. Student can enjoy it and of course make them be familiar with the language and build their confidence to speak English. It’s the effective way and appropriate to be applied on the intermediate level learner phase.
                 We hope that next research on the similar topic would more concern on the long period application and measure how the effect specifically. It will give so much help on the English language teaching in Indonesia and provides effective way on teaching learning development.
