Indonesia’s International Airports Ordered to Apply Green Concepts
Tri Listiyarini | March 14, 2012

Indonesia’s Transportation Ministry has ordered the country’s international airports to start implementing environmentally friendly concepts to support the government’s 26 percent emission cut target by 2020.

The decree was signed by the ministry’s director general of air transportation, Herry Bakti Singayuda Gumay, on March 5.

The “eco-airport” concept, as the ministry refers to it, is expected to help cut green-house gas emissions.

The President has set the target of emission cuts from all sectors at 26 percent by 2020, or 41 percent with help from other countries. We hope the eco-airport concept can help him achieve the target,” said Bambang Tjahjono, the director of airports at the ministry.

Bambang said airports could plant trees, use environmentally-friendly building materials, call on airlines to use new aircrafts, use biofuel for automobiles operating at airports and install solar panels as part of the eco-airport concept.

Of Indonesia’s 233 airports, 45 are international.

Bambang said Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Jakarta, Juanda Airport in Surabaya, Ngurah Rai Airport in Denpasar, Hang Nadim Airport in Batam and Sultan Mahmud Badarudin II Airport in Palembang, were so far the only Indonesian international airports that had initiated the implementation of green concepts through the establishment of an “Eco-airport Council.”
